The sixth edition of the Side by Side Festival Côte à Côte, Canada's only festival of literary translation, includes a series of workshops, discussions and readings in many languages designed to celebrate our region’s literature.

We would like to thank the the other generous organizations and individuals who have contributed to the festival. In particular, support from the Province of New Brunswick, the Literary Translators' Association of Canada, the Canada Council for the Arts and St. Thomas University has made it possible for us to bring together audiences and artists from several language groups.

Maritime Writers' Workshop

The 2008 Maritime Writers’ Workshop
Series of Full-Day Workshops
Date: Thursday, July 10, 2008

Course Title: Literary Translation Workshop

Description: Writing poetry always involves an interpretation and a performance. This workshop is for both bilingual and unilingual writers. To get a feel for the wordplay, invention and creativity that translating poetry involves, we'll start by translating from English poetry into English prose. We'll also do experiments in language that include translating from English into "jabberwock" as well as experimenting with translating from French into English (dictionaries, both human and paper, will be available). All are welcome. No experience necessary.

Instructor Bio: Jo-Anne Elder
Jo-Anne Elder is a writer, literary translator and the director of revue ellipse mag. Her collection of postcard stories, Postcards from Ex-Lovers, was awarded the inaugural David Adams Richards prize and was published by Broken Jaw Press, in Fredericton, in 2005. Jo-Anne has translated over a dozen books and was short listed for the Governor General's Literary Award for Translation. She is an enthusiastic community worker and workshop leader.
Location: TBA on the UNB Campus, Fredericton NB

Cost: The fee for each full-day workshop is $150 (+HST).

1. The note about refreshments available on Tuesday, in the Lounge in 201, Edmund Casey Hall, doesn't give a lot of info. about what's happening. Elisabet Rafols and Michael Bantjes will be reading from their play translation, and Elisabet and Mark Abley will take part in a dialogue about the work of Anne Szumigalski. All are welcome to drop in for coffee and conversation during the afternoon.
Added to the Side by Side Reading, Old Government House, Tuesday at 8 *a.m.* : Elisabet Rafols & Michael Bantjes

Side by Side Workshops

Planning is underway for our intensive workshop series. The Side By Side Fall Workshop will take place between September 29 and October 3. As well as the Side by Side Festival activities, participants can choose from Creative Writing and Translation workshops in poetry, theatre, fiction, and literary non-fiction (including book and arts reviews). This year, the options are very flexible. Write to us at ellipsemag [at] gmail [dot] com and we'll match up your interests and schedule and our availability.

historique / a bit of history

In 2002, less than a year after moving Ellipse to Fredericton, Éditions ellipse inc. presented a bilingual reading as a launch of a tribute issue on Fred Cogswell, who had recently moved to Vancouver. The reading was a continuation of our much-loved (W)RITES OF SPRING Readings held at St. Thomas University in the early 90s, and, like them, featured a number of Acadian and Maritime poets and writers. The following year, we planned a similar launch of an issue dedicated to Robert Dickson and Roy Miki, the Governor General's Literary Award winners in the poetry category that year. It was a good idea, but because the issue wasn't quite ready to be released, we turned Robert Dickson's visit to Fredericton and Moncton into first a reading tour and then a festival. Our dear Robert thus became the unwitting but very witty instigator of the Side by Side Festival, which he also called the Rib-to-Rib Festival. Why the name? Because we wanted to illustrate our mission of placing writers (and particularly poets) from two different languages next to each other, in the pages of Ellipse (now revue ellipse mag) and at the podium at the festival. Writer and translator, two writers, of equal status, together and attached by respect, but also by freedom, as are their two languages. (To paraphrase Irving Layton, "if nothing else, the translation of poetry is freedom.") So no, the lack of hyphens is not a typo.

Soyez des nôtres / Be Here!

The fifth edition of the Side by Side Festival of Literary Translation will be held in Fredericton and Moncton from September 29 through October 2, 2007. The Side by Side Festival* is the only literary festival in Canada entirely devoted to literary translation.
